In 1901, when Australia became a Federation, a search for the site of federal capital began. Although European settlers first came to this region in the 1830’s, it was only in 1911 that the Australian Capital Territory was established.  In 1913, the capital was officially announced and named Canberra.  Located on the land of the indigenous Ngunnawal people, Canberra’s name is thought to be derived from the Aboriginal word Kamberra, meaning “meeting place”.
From a sheep paddock, more than 2330 square kilometres were set aside for government and commercial use, as well as for natural parkland.
Canberra is the urban centre of the ACT and is home to 325,000 people who bring to it numerous cultural heritages and employment skills.  Canberra’s suburbs are interspersed between green spaces and parks, and the entire area is surrounded by rural areas and stretches of natural bushland.
The design of Canberra was the centre of an international competition, with the winning design belonging to Walter Burley Griffin of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Griffin’s design located Capital Hill as the centre of the city and the symbolic centre of the nation. Key government buildings such as Parliament House, the High Court, and old Parliament house are found in this area, known as the Parliamentary Triangle.  Visit www.nationalcapital.gov.au for more information.
Canberra is home to national institutions such as the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, National Museum, Australian War Memorial, and the National Library.  It is also home to national institutions of excellence in research and education such as the Australian National University, University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University.  The Australian Science Festival is also held here yearly.
Sports and art also flourish here. The Australian Choreographic Centre regularly hosts guest residencies. The National Folk Festival draws thousands of singers, dancers, and musicians every Easter.  Elite athletes populate the Australian Institute of Sport, and professional and amateur competitions and clubs abound.  Visit www.canberratourism.com.au for more information.
Canberra’s public transport system is the public ACTION Buses, which covers major sites and most suburbs with a convenient timetable.  Visit www.action.act.gov.au for more information.
