Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies Australia (LSSA)

Who are we?

Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies Australia (LSSA) was formed in 2006 as a training organization committed to providing professional training and education in Laban Movement Analysis, Bartenieff Fundamentals sm, and associated somatic movement theories for Australia and its Asian neighbours.

spacerLSSA is the Southern hemisphere’s sister organization to Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies Canada (LSSC: www.labancan.org ).  Both these organizations function under the Laban/Bartenieff and Somatic Studies International (LSSI: www.labaninternational.org ) umbrella and are committed to providing in-depth, experiential training at a professional level in somatic movement theories.

LSSA offers introductory and pre-requisite workshops, specialized seminars in advanced theory and associated somatic movement theories, and for the first time in Australia, a Modular Certificate program in Laban Movement Analysis and Bartenieff Fundamentals sm.

Laban Movement Analysis

LMA is a system and a language for observing, describing, notating, and understanding all forms of movement. A movement analyst uses this language to describe and interpret human movement from the gesture of a hand in conversation to the complex action of a skilled athlete, from breathing patterns of an infant, to whole body involvement of a dancer.  LMA is a tool used by anyone wishing to enhance, refine, and clarify movement.

Because movement reflects our innermost feelings and ways of being in the world, LMA can also used to understand and explore psychological aspects of self.

Since the first certification training in 1966 in New York City, training in Laban Movement Analysis has implied a rigourous theoretical and experiential knowledge of human movement, beyond the sciences of anatomy and biomechanics. Because LMA looks at movement from the lenses of Body, Shape, Space, Effort, Patterning, and Relationship, Laban Movement Analysts have applied their training not only to physical endeavours but also to the entire realm of non-verbal human communication, research, and personal growth.

Today’s Laban Movement Analysts are employing their skills and expertise in the following fields:

Dance training
Dance research
Body work and somatics
Physiotherapy
Choreography
Fitness
Sport
Corporate coaching
Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis
Dance Therapy
All forms of education and coaching
